# Genode and the vision of truly trustworthy computing (recording)

Last week, I had the opportunity to present Genode at the [operating-systems group](https://tu-dresden.de/ing/informatik/sya/professur-fuer-betriebssysteme) of TU Dresden. Abstract:  
_The talk presents Genode, an open-source operating system created_  
_independently from the ground up by a small team in Dresden over_  
_the span of 16 years._

_It started with the vision of a truly trustworthy general-purpose_  
_OS that combines a novel architecture with microkernels,_  
_capability-based security, sandboxed device drivers, and virtual_  
_machines. This vision ultimately culminated in Sculpt OS - a_  
_ready-to-use operating system for commodity PC hardware._

_With an attack surface reduced by 99% compared to contemporary_  
_OSes and robustness against entire classes of typical failures_  
_like crashing drivers or memory exhaustion, it provides the_  
_(technically inclined) user with a surprising new level of control_  
_and autonomy. It boldly challenges established concepts like the_  
_installation, configuration, and spawning of software with a fresh_  
_angle. This is not just intellectually enticing but also reflected_  
_by its custom user interface._

_Norman Feske is one of the founders of the Genode project. Besides_  
_presenting the motivation and the fundamental concepts behind_  
_Genode and speaking about trust issues, his talk will touch_  
_technical tidbits like cross-kernel binary compatibility and the_  
_re-use of Linux device drivers. It goes without saying that the_  
_talk will be presented live on Sculpt OS._

I missed this one last year. Thank you for presenting in English for your foreign audience, and for taking the time in the beginning of this presentation to pause and show how the system operates in real time on your laptop. I always wondered how you presented PowerPoints on sculpt.

I hope you’ll find time again this year to do another walk through video, but this time in more detail. I’d be very interested to see how you set up your own system and what things you keep persistent and what things you build each time. Also whether or not you run sculpt on the internal hard drive or from a USB. I’d specifically like a demo on setting up the virtual machine so to make the system more feasible for daily use.
